NATURE FIRST WORKSHOP IN ROMANIA: EXPLORING FORENSIC INTELLIGENCE FOR NATURE CONSERVATION

We are thrilled to share insights from the Nature FIRST Field Site Workshop in Romania, which took place from October 2nd to October 6th, 2023. Hosted in Bucharest and Tulcea, this workshop brought together key stakeholders in the Romanian Environmental, Agriculture, and Fishing sectors to explore and learn more about the innovative Nature FIRST project. Here's a glimpse of the events that unfolded during this informative and impactful week.

Day 1: Setting the Stage

The workshop began with a policy lab session held in Bucharest, where representatives of national public authorities gathered to understand the objectives of the Nature FIRST project. This session aimed to shed light on Romania's state-of-play concerning monitoring and reporting in compliance with national and international regulations, particularly the Birds and Habitats Directives (Natura 2000) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The discussions also touched upon critical issues like illegal logging, making it a productive and insightful start to the workshop.

Day 2: Diving into Solutions

The Nature FIRST Consortium members arrived in Tulcea, located in the stunning Danube Delta area, ready to delve into the core of the project. This day was all about exploring the solutions and cutting-edge technology behind Nature FIRST. Attendees had the opportunity to learn about ecosystem base maps, monitoring ecosystems, digital twins, and semantics-driven tools.

Day 3: Forensic Sciences in Action

The third day of the workshop was dedicated to understanding how forensic sciences are applied to tackle wildlife crimes. Participants engaged in enlightening discussions with Romanian stakeholders, gaining a deeper insight into their needs for forensic training. This knowledge was invaluable for comprehending the complex ecosystem and various stakeholders involved in the fight against wildlife crime.

In the afternoon, attendees had a hands-on session focusing on fingerprint evidence, further enhancing their understanding of forensic techniques. The day was marked by rich conversations and a shared commitment to the cause of conservation.

Day 4: Field Trip and Stakeholder Discussions

On the fourth day, attendees boarded a ship for a field trip within the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. This unique opportunity allowed for discussions with present stakeholders about the vision and ambition for the reserve and the challenges and impediments faced in implementing environmental policies.

Day 5: Reflection and Planning

The final day of the workshop brought together consortium members for a reflection session. Attendees discussed what had gone well during the workshop and areas that could be improved. They also explored value propositions and the progress toward making a meaningful impact in the field of environmental conservation.

The Nature FIRST Field Site Workshop in Romania was a resounding success, bringing together experts, stakeholders, and policymakers to collaborate and share knowledge on conservation, forensic intelligence, and environmental protection. It also marked a significant step forward in the collective efforts to address environmental crimes and conserve the natural world.

We look forward to more such collaborative initiatives and continued progress in the mission to protect our environment for future generations. Stay tuned for more updates on the Nature FIRST project by signing up for our newsletter here.
